Break

To all my loyal readers (both of you), I’m taking a short break to catch up on some other pressing work.  I expect to start posting again on Easter Sunday. I’m enjoying blogging so much that it’s a distraction from some things that I really have to do right now.  I will still be checking in to reply [...]

Dangdut! Dewi Ular

Dewi the Snake.  I guess it means that her voice is so sweet it even charms the snakes that co-habit the box she lives in.  Well, as you can see, her manager is so mean he keeps his pet snakes in the same box poor Dewi lives in.  He only lets her out to perform.  Notice [...]

Jakarta Street Food: Nasi Uduk

What a way to start the day.  Rather than fussing with special meals such as muesli or cornflakes, Indonesians breakfast on whatever they happen to feel like.  And who doesn’t feel like deep fried spicy goodness at all times of the day and night?  Even the rice is steamed with coconut milk.

Jakarta Street Food: Es Buah Segar

Fresh iced fruit.  One of the nicest foodie things about SE Asia is the tropical fruit and fruit juices.  I don’t think there are any fruits which are ONLY found in Indonesia, but you can certainly find most fruits there.  The only fruits I know of which aren’t grown in Indonesia are the ones needing frost [...]

Jakarta Street Food: Bakso

Meatball soup.  For reasons I can’t fathom, this simple dish is extremely popular.  Especially with girls.  Maybe it’s because it seems to be low fat.  I rarely eat it though, I don’t like the texture of the meatballs – too rubbery and not meat-like at all.

Smoking clown – Badut

When I think of clowns, I think of the acrobatic ones from the Russian circus with their prat falls, tumbling and slapstick.  I thought that you would at least have to put a bit of effort into it.  Not in Indonesia.  These two slackers get away with a little prancy dance, shake a few kids’ [...]

Jakarta Street Food: Warteg (Vegetarian)

A ‘warung’ is a small restaurant.  ‘Tegal’ means a dry field, that is one which has not been flooded for rice growing and is therefore suitable for growing vegetables.  By combining and shortening the two words, we get ‘warteg’, vegetarian restaurant.  This practice of shortening and combining two words to make a new one is quite [...]

Dangdut! Susi

So far, I haven’t found any other record on the internet for this performer.  It’s entirely possible that Susi is her correct and full name, though.  Possibly a karaoke club singer whose been enlisted to beef up the line-up for this concert.  She has quite a unique and pleasant sound, with that trembling vibrato.  It gives a sense [...]

Jakarta street food: Sate Kambing

This clip ties up nicely with yesterday’s post about the paper-eating goats.  The goat meat I’ve tried in Indonesia has always been tough.  This is because they only slaughter them when they’re at the end of their useful life.  This is why goat is best taken in tiny pieces as in sate kambing (goat sate).  [...]

World’s most populous island?: Bungin

It might be an idea to turn the sound off if you want to watch this clip. The powers that be want to turn this place into some kind of tourist attraction.  I guess the island has one big advantage – there’s nothing else for miles around.  As you can gather from the map in the [...]
